Location Scouting…San Bernardino
By jeff | August 13, 2008
A lot of our film takes place in the desert…of which Southern California has plenty. It’s just a matter of finding it without getting too far away.
Or wandering into undesired territory.

Quote, Jean-Luc Godard
By vern | August 2, 2008
When in France, find a good French Director quote:

“All you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun.” -Jean-Luc Godard
“And a camera with batteries and a handful of p2 cards.” - Vern Moen

The “Best-of” in Craigslist Responses
By jeff | July 28, 2008
Posting on losangeles.craigslist.org is a treacherous beast.
It’s a place where many seek work, both talented and not-so-talented. In some ways, it’s the place to post. One ad, one hour, you’ll get hundreds of responses. Like I said, those hundreds of responses are generally, well, untalented people and unhappy people.

Writers block and a bump in the road…
By deAndra | July 21, 2008
For any of you that have been following the Hobosoul blog, you know of the misadventures of the Vanagon (if you haven’t, check it out… thehobosoul.com/blog, Vanagon: A Sad Story Part I). Who knew it would cause writers block. I had taken my script and notes with me that weekend to get some work done on the road trip home, so naturally I tried to work on the bus…that lasted all of about 12 minutes. I tagged some pages and called it a day.
When we finally arrived home on Sunday night, all I wanted to do was take a shower, I couldn’t even think about Jon and how I could make his story better.

Current Status Update
By jeff | July 9, 2008
We’ve got no money.
In the entire scheme of filmmaking, we’re broke. The SAG agreement for “Ultra Low Budget” films is “less than $200,000″. Right now, we’re at 5% of that. We haven’t yet done out our full budget—but basically, we’re already in the red. Just thinking about where to spend that money…runs us out of money.
So, here’s some things that have happened in the past week to make us smile:

Table read…no photos.
By jeff | July 2, 2008
A time saving/story improving tip:
Have a table read. Get some actors, some food/drinks, and listen. Your words might sound different than they read. For example, in a discussion about a car being towed, “You can ride with george or heel toe it to the next gas station.”
Extra eyes/ears on your work also helps to see what you aren’t seeing and what you thought you were conveying…but may not have done well.
So, thank you—Gordon Martin, Jillary Gordon, Kevin Mack, Pat Ryan, Danielle Cedillo, Joel and Tabitha Wirth, Tim Larson, Tracy Close, and Melinda Moen, for your time and thoughts.
(We usually documemt everything…forgot to take photos and the video camera battery died. Oops)

On Spending (Wasting) Time
By vern | June 26, 2008
As you may or (probably) may not know, we’ve given this blog a little work-over today.
Making a film, I’m quickly realizing, is an extremely time consuming and extensive process. I have a list of about 35 things to do in the next couple days and about 100 other things to just straight worry about after that.
I just realized that Jeff and I just sent 4 thought-filled emails back and forth as to whether or not we should include a period (as in a “.”) at the end of the header sentence (or is it a sentence???) at the top of this blog.
THAT, you might call, is thoroughness becoming of aspiring directors, or, most likely just pathetic.
Either way, enjoy the period.
AND I JUST REALIZED I JUST SPENT 15 MINUTES TYPING AND POSTING THIS BLOG ABOUT US WASTING TIME TALKING ABOUT PERIODS…

CASTING, The Callbacks
By vern | June 26, 2008
So we’re in the middle of actor callbacks. For me, acting is the biggest priority with the film. I feel that if we have the best actors we can find, we can get away with so much more in film. If the audience believes what the actors are saying and doing, they wont even notice that my elbow is in the shot or Jeff’s underwear is hanging from the cabinet.
